I was thinking the other day about the frustrations I have at times with my computer. I have certain software on my computer that updates on a regular basis, whether I like it or not. Some of the updates have slowed my computer downAdobeStock 143828361 or even caused it to crash.

The wonderful thing about software is that if problems like this occur, there is a tool called “backdating.” So, I can go back to a past date before the problem occurred and have my computer reset to that point. Then, the computer begins to function normally again once the corruption is gone.

Could it be that we need to backdate in children’s ministry? Do we need a complete system reboot?

In the process of trying to educate our children, we have moved away from discipleship. We have focused more on giving them knowledge about the Bible rather than teaching them how to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

In most churches today for their first 18 years, children just sit and listen while adult leaders minister to them, and they never experience all God has planned for them. So many children hear all the stories and hear about God’s great glory; however, they never understand or see their value and importance in the body of Christ. Many times, they are asked to wait until they are adults before they can serve.

This has become a very significant reason why many turn away from the church as they get older.

Dr. Richard Ross shares that we are losing half of our kids the moment they head to college, never to return to church in adulthood. Of the 50% that stay in the church, 40% will be and are apathetic Christians.

They sit and listen, but they have no desire to serve because they were never taught how to serve or allowed to serve as children.

Ross says that only about 10% have a Kingdom perspective and a Great Commission mindset.

This tells me that we need a “system reboot” in children’s and student ministry. We need to backdate to what Scripture says versus what man says. We need to look at the Word of God and see what it means to become a disciple.

God has a plan for each child in your church. He desires all of them to come to know Him, but it doesn’t stop there.

We are called as a church family to disciple, equip, and release children for ministry in the church and on mission today.

We are called to partner with families because they have the most significant spiritual influence on their children. We are called to come alongside families and provide them with tools and trained leaders who know how to disciple and release their child according to their gifts.

Every child (Timothy) needs a Paul in their life.

About 15 years ago, the Lord called me to step out of the typical ministry box for kids.

As I began to see His plans for their lives, I saw transformation.

We taught children how to pray, and they became prayer warriors.

We taught them how to share their faith, and they became fearless sharing the Gospel.

We taught them how to be in the Word of God daily, and God’s Word transformed their lives.

We discovered that they had spiritual gifts, so we equipped them to use their gifts, and they became amazing leaders in the church.

Could it be that you need to reboot your children’s ministry? Do you need to backdate to what God’s Word says versus what man says?
